Hat Yai International Airport, with IATA code HDY and ICAO code VTSS, is an international airport situated in Songkhla Province in southern Thailand, close to the city of Hat Yai. The airport is managed by Airports of Thailand, PLC (AOT) and caters to over 1.5 million passengers annually, handling 9,500 flights and 12,000 tons of cargo. The airport is located 9 km to the east of downtown Hat Yai and 43 km east of Songkhla city.
The airport offers a variety of facilities for passengers, including restaurants, shops, and duty-free outlets. Additional services include currency exchange booths, ATMs, retail outlets, left-luggage facilities, free Wi-Fi, mobile-charging ports, facilities for the disabled, car parking, car rental services, and information desks. The airport is equipped with two runways that can accommodate a wide range of aircraft, including large wide-body jets.
The airport consists of one main terminal building that caters to both domestic and international flights. The terminal is split into two floors, with the arrivals area located on the ground floor and the departures area on the second floor. Inside the terminal, you’ll only find a few cafes, snack shops and Burger King fast food.
Hat Yai International Airport is a significant gateway to numerous popular tourist destinations in southern Thailand, including the idyllic island of Koh Lipe. Since Koh Lipe does not have its own airport, Hat Yai International Airport serves as the nearest airport to the island. To reach Koh Lipe, travellers can take a minivan to Pak Bara Pier and then board a speedboat that will take them right onto the island (around 2 hours).
The airport’s location and connectivity make it a crucial entry point for tourists visiting the island, thereby playing a significant role in local tourism.
There are multiple flights every day from both Bangkok Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang airports.
