Alitalia, founded in 2009 is a government owned Italian airline (from March 2020) with 2 home hubs in Rome Fiumicino and in Milan Linate Airport. They also base in Catania Milan Malpensa, Palermo and Naples airports.

With its size of 91 aircraft, the Alitalia airline is operating on routes to roughly 100 destinations.

All their flights from London Heathrow are newly managed from Terminal 2.

The airline belongs to SKYTEAM Alliance and has its own Earn Miles account where you might earn 3 miles for every spent euro from their catalog purchases and of course from booking tickets with them, depending on the class and route.

  • International long haul flights and extra Schengen area: closes  60 minutes before scheduled flight

Departure flights from the rest of Italy: 

  • Domestic flights: closes 35 minutes before scheduled flight
  • International medium haul flights: closes  45 minutes before scheduled flight
  • International long haul flights: closes 60 minutes before scheduled flight

Departure from abroad:

  • From most of the European cities: closes 40 minutes before scheduled flight
  • From North, South and Latin America continents, India, Japan and Korea: closes 60 minutes (in the USA arrive at check-in at least 3 hours before departure).
  • Flights from Cairo: closes 45 minutes before scheduled flight
  • Flights from Algiers, Tunis, Casablanca, Tel Aviv, Beirut and Amman: closes 60 minutes before scheduled flight.

 

The boarding gate for Alitalia flights closes usually about 15 minutes before the flight departure time, this time, however, may be different in some airports.

    • For the US flights open only 24 hours before the flight
  • Closes up to 90 minutes prior to departure for international flights

Seat Selection

Seat selection is free in Economy Comfort, Economy Flex and Business Class.

There is a fee for a seat change during online check-in in Economy Light fare (seats are initially automatically assigned in this fare).

The fees are as follows:

  • Domestic and international flights: €5 per flight
  • Flights to the US and Canada: €20 per flight
  • Flights from the US and Canada: US$25 per flight
