Heraklion Airport named after Nikosi Kazantzakis, a Greek writer, is the largest Crete’s airport located just a few minutes from the Heraklion city. There are many charter flights coming in during the summer months, and only a few domestic flights to Athenes during winter flight schedule.
The airport’s quite obsolete terminal becomes very busy, over its capacity during summer peak months.
The Heraklion Airport bus runs every 10-15 minutes all year round, from 6:00 to 12:00 (06:00 am to 12:00 am). So waiting time during summer or winter period should not be a problem. The bus service does not run during the night.
From the Heraklion terminal exit of the main doors, turn right, then follow the road around to the left, to all the bus stops.
All airport buses with the sign “IRAKLIO” or (ΗΡΑΚΛΕΙΟ) on the upfront, terminate at main the bus station in Heraklion. Buses are operated by KTEL company.
The journey time from Heraklion Airport to the city is about 20 minutes depending on the road traffic.
There are two bus stations in Heraklion city.
Bus station A (includes Rethymno and Chania station) – across the road from the port, near the marina – east of the city centre
Bus station B – at Hanioporta (part of the old city walls, at the beginning of 62 Martyrs street) – west of the city centre
See bus operator’s official website to find intercity buses from Heraklion Bus station.
